Lady Warriors Battle Borden in BIGGS Way

Kelsey Biggs and her parents stood at center court before the Borden game knowing this was the seniors last chance to compete in this gym.  As the crowd cheered during the ceremony, you could see the bitter sweet looks on Ken and Kris Biggs faces and on those of her coaches and teammates.  This would be her final chance to play big in front of a home crowd.

Coming into the game, each team had 6 wins on the year (Borden now 6-11, CAI now 6-14), both had young talent, and both were desperate to get on track headed into the final week before sectionals.  In the first quarter, freshman center Rachel Boesing and senior forward Kelsey Biggs got the Lady Warriors rolling before Bordens super sophomore, Erin Mikel began to take over.  Mikel (who finished the night with 21 points and 9 rebounds) was able to hit a 3 pointer late int he first quarter to send the game to Q2 with Borden leading 14-8.  Borden then went on a 10-0 run to start the second quarter and take the largest lead of the half, 24-8.  At the break, the Lady Warriors went to the lockers trailing 32-18 but still within reach.

As the second half began, sophomore point guard Stephanie Combs began to lead the charge by trying to control the tempo on the floor and get the ball in the right hands for scoring opportunities.  While Borden went up 40-22 six minutes into the 3rd quarter, the Lady Warriors were getting stirred up.  From that point on it was all CAI.  Over the last 10 minutes of the game, CAI outscored the Braves 19-6 and at one point with over a minute left had pulled to within a bucket of the visiting team.  With Christian Academy on their doorstep, Borden did a great job running out the clock and preserving the win.

While the game ended in defeat, the Lady Warriors had some great things happen.  Senior Kelsey Biggs finished her last home game with 12 pts, 6 rebounds, 3 steals, a blocked shot, and an assist.  What a way to go out Kelsey!!!  On top of that, freshman center Rachel Boesing had a huge night with 15 points, 12 rebounds, and a blocked shot.  Overall, the Lady Warriors finished the night with 7 girls contributing on the scoreboard which may be their most well rounded attack of the year.  Now as the team enters the final week before sectionals, they have to get healthy and find some more success in their last two regular season games.  The Lady Warriors travel to Orleans in the beginning of the week and wrap up Thursday night in Crothersville.  Go Warriors!
